“When I was a kid I had recurring dreams of an empty world. To all intents and purposes it was the world I knew, and it looked exactly the same as it did in real life, but it was completely devoid of any other people. I was usually pretty frightened in those dreams because I knew that people weren’t simply out of sight; they were gone, yet there was also a strange sense of security in the emptiness of the landscape that I’ve always carried with me.”

“Young Doomen tell stories of men who sleep and eat with their pigeons and others who have left their wives for the birds. Over Tennents beer and cigarettes they talk about long ago fights over birds which left someone’s uncle or grandfather stabbed or beaten.”

“They talk about how huts used to be torched, almost forgotten brawls and van loads of Edinburgh Doomen raiding huts in Glasgow en mass. But most of all they talk about the excitement of the catch: Who has caught what; who’s flying well, the near misses and the thrill of the catch.”

“This series explores ‘Doo flying’, a pass-time which has been practiced in Scotland since Victorian times. Thousands, mainly in the housing schemes of Edinburgh and Glasgow, fly Horseman Thief pigeons, or ‘Doos’ from their lofts, bedrooms, living rooms and sheds often built by hand.”

“Horseman Thief Pouters are a type of pigeon which have been used for hundreds of years to capture other pigeons. This is a unique trait of this particular breed and other breeds do not have the ability to seduce other pigeons back to their home loft.”

“The sport of Doo-flying is based around the thrill of catching another Dooman’s pigeons. The birds are firstly kept from mating as long as possible in order to ‘build up steam’.”

“Doomen then send male or female birds up in an effort to entice members of the opposite sex, which belong to a fellow flyer, back to the hut. Men and women of all ages fly against neighbours, friends or relatives and have been doing so for the hundreds of years.”

“I began taking pictures of missing persons posters after a friend’s husband went missing and I started noticing these flyers, which are so often seen but overlooked. The thing that really drew me into this project is the unresolved nature of the search.”

“I’m always left wondering whether this person was ever found, or if they are still alive, perhaps living a different life somewhere else. And then there’s the heartbreaking question how long some families hang on to the hope that their husband, wife, parent, child or friend might still be found.”

“The Canaries series is a personal account of life on the edge of modern civilization – as one of the human canaries, the first casualties of a ubiquitous synthetic chemical culture. Since World War II the production and use of synthetic petroleum derived chemicals has exploded. We live in a world today where man-made chemicals are part of every breath we take and where electro magnetic emissions are beaming at us from every corner.”

“As a result it is believed that more than ten million Americans have developed a disabling condition referred to as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) or Environmental Illness (EI). MCS is a condition in which the immune and central nervous systems go into extreme reactions when exposed to small amounts of daily chemicals like perfume, cleaning products, car exhaust, printed matter, construction materials and pesticides.”

“When the delicate balance of life first has been broken there seems no end to how sensitive we can become or to which element one might sensitize. In addition to chemicals some react to food, electromagnetic fields, textiles and even light – making life a near impossibility.”

“Many people with MCS/EI end up living as refugees in remote areas out of tents, cars, or retro-fitted trailers, away from dangers of neighbors’ chemical use. Others are prisoners of their homes, with advanced air filter systems to keep outside air from contaminating their breathing space.”

“At the core of the bizarre, and sometimes freakish, appearance of Environmental Illness is a questioning of the sanity of a human world continuing to develop in a manner that is toxic to life itself.”

“Contours is a study of the landscape that can be found in the suburbs of Paris; it looks at how it is used by its citizens and managed by its state. It tries to get past the stereotypes that have come to be associated with the territory and document it as a region in its own right, not only as a periphery. The work focuses on a selection of natural areas, which illustrate the relationship between the landscape and those that form it.”

‘On 15 October 2011, protestors representing the global Occupy movement set up a semi-permanent camp outside St. Paul’s Cathedral in central London. The aim of the protest was to encourage discourse and raise awareness of social and economic inequalities.

On 25 October, several UK newspapers and media outlets ran stories claiming that ‘thermal imaging’ proved that only 10% of the 250 tents in St. Paul’s Square were being inhabited overnight. I was immediately sceptical of these claims.’

This series of photographs catalogues some of the communal and private spaces that were installed in the St. Paul’s and Finsbury Square camps. The traces of activity and inhabitance serve as a clear document of the utilisation of a limited space by a large number of permanent and temporary residents.

A third of all profits will be donated to support future community and outreach initiatives being undertaken by the Occupy London campaigners.
